A Quick Start Guide for Exploring the Quarter’s Cultural Corridor

Editor’s note: While summer heat keeps the Quarter’s tourism count down, it is actually one of the best times to explore the neighborhood. Visitors can wander through more than 20 cool museums or cultural attractions, all only blocks apart. Dining for lunch or dinner (or both!) in one of the local eateries tops off a memorable day that breaks the summer’s monotony.
To make planning a summer trip more attractive: August is Museum Month. All month, members of the FQMA are offering free admission if you have a membership to any participating museum in the city! It coincides with COOLinary New Orleans, where participating restaurants offer special deals for lunch (if they serve lunch) and dinner. A whopping 35 French Quarter restaurants are participating this year!
When the Lady Gaga video filmed in the French Quarter aired before the 2025 Super Bowl kickoff, more than 100 million people watched it, enthralled.
But thousands of New Orleanians laughed – or cringed – when they heard this opening line: “Here on Bourbon Street, always the heart and soul of New Orleans…”
Most locals have partied at one time or another on the raucous commercial strip of boozy Bourbon, but if pressed to put a heart-shaped sticker on a map, Jackson Square would surely take first place: It’s the oldest public square in the city’s oldest neighborhood.
And it’s smack in the middle of the city’s Cultural Corridor. In fact, three museums are located right on Jackson Square: the Cabildo, the Presbyteré and the 1850 House.
The recently coined Cultural Corridor descriptor is beginning to take hold in the French Quarter – although most of the museums it contains have been around for decades.
In recent years, 13 of the neighborhood’s public and non-profit museums have banded together in the French Quarter Museum Association (FQMA). Their mission is to make a museum visit “an integral part of everyone’s French Quarter experience.”
Several private museums and cultural centers in the Quarter join FQMA members in offering deep dives into the city’s extraordinary history and culture. Each reveals hidden layers of New Orleans, ones that are rich, vibrant, memorable – and often jaw-dropping.
Some schedule talks and tours or live music performances (many are free!), while others feature cooking demos and yoga classes.
Sharing your trip on social media? The corridor offers an insider’s access to amazing historic buildings, artwork, exhibits and courtyards that will have friends back home oooing and ahhing – and make your Instagram feed blow up.
Locals – and we’re including regional folks who consider New Orleans their city of the heart – also enjoy a meaningful lagniappe: a deeper knowledge and appreciation for this place you call home.
